"What if the KISS Solo Albums Never Happened" Article:

Post by PinkWiz »

Pretty cool "what if" article on Kiss releasing a studio album in '78 instead of the solo albums. I don't agree with some of what he says (suggesting Gene sing Ozone?) but it's still a fun read...

^^ He should've used a Love Gune/Alive II era photo for the cover instead of a '76 pic ^^

and I most definitely agree with his quote at the end of the article:

"Now, I’d like to envision a future where Vinny V stays on and KISS keeps the make-up on and they rule the 80’s with a mighty fist! But that is a fantasy for another time."

I agree with some, but not all.

I don't think Alive II is fantastic, it kinda sounds like a bootleg rather than a pro soundboard show, but it's not as bad as he says.

I also don't think Paul's solo album sounds like Dynasty and Unmaskes, more like a simpler 80's KISS.

None of the albums sounded too much like KISS, as they were diluted solo efforts, which is fine, that's what they were meant to be. Ace's is a great hard rock album released under the KISS name.

I wouldn't change anything in KISS' back catalog except for The Elder. I enjoyed the pop sound on Dynasty and Unmasked, and a proper rock record after that would have saved their careers as they still had one last shot at the public caring and listening to their output. Following on from there could have been more cool rock albums, and Ace may have stayed on as well since The Elder didn't happen.

New York Groove sux too! Can't stand that song! Rip it Out! Now that's a cool song!
Promises made, crying in vain, all empty. Never accepting the blame and not letting go of the shame. A river of tears, as months turn to years, all wasted. On someone not willing to change. Now only a shadow remains! :(

Oh no Andrew, Rip It Out rules but NY Groove is a killer song. It's also the only one on his album I could see on a Kiss album like Love Gun.

If Vinnie Vincent remained in KISS, he could've ushered in a new era.

I enjoy Gene and Pauls solo albums more than most of the bands studio albums.

I pretty much agree with this although Gene's album has a few gems ( The Beatle-esque stuff) on it while Peter's album has a title that I say all of the time , "That's The Kind Of Sugar Papa Likes".

The opening to Gene's album was the greatest buildup to a flaccid penis I've ever witnessed:

Always Near You/Nowhere to Hide.

Had to listen to it now that I wrote about it.

Always Near You... I've always loved that fukn song! The chords, the phrasing, the vocal, the little "guitar swell" in the verse... killer tune... always takes me back to Xmas '78.

It's a fantastic song. I love everything about it. I ended up listening to the remainder of the album after that.

Good for you Vic!

I like all the solo albums except Peter Criss. I must say that I'm thoroughly enjoying Peter Criss's Book though :-)
