Vinnie's expectations
Tom,
How many times did you meet with Vinnie to get his exact requirements for his AZG guitars that you paid and built for NAMM 2011 ?
He must have been a stickler for details and measurements. I bet he came to your workshop a lot and accrued many airline miles getting everything JUST RIGHT.
Did he offer any of his instruments to you as comparison?
Any photographs of you and Vinnie Any of his classic guitars?

Re: Vinnie's expectations
In 2010-2011 I never once met with Vinnie except on the phone and computer. I did a lot of layout work in my 2D CAD program and just sent drawings back and forth. He did provide photos of the Jackson Silver / Purple from which I extrapolated a lot of info about the guitar plus he sent me an outline of it from which to get a base to start with. I got the basic dimensions from that line drawing and filled in the rest myself.
Re: Vinnie's expectations
Vinnie really embraced the modern era didn't he? Do it all long distance.
His record for perfection makes that interesting, you would think he would have been all over the design and build process.
On second thought, maybe it was better he didn't.

rust on the bolts?
Re: Vinnie's expectations
Here is the proof that the purple one used to be pink
Re: Vinnie's expectations
It also proves the neck pick up was added. I believe for sure he only had 2 Jackson vv models.
Bye Bye
Re: Vinnie's expectations
Those photos were shot by the Vin-man his-self and emailed to me so I could see the detail areas on the guitar and the general construction methods. Once I had the basic layout drawn up I was able to do a pretty good job of building the copies as close as possible to the originals. On the Carvin model I had to find as much detail reference on the web as I could and went from there. All of the headstocks were obviously copies of the 92 PEAR as were the fretboard inlays. Speaking of those, on the Gold Leaf model I used Gold Mother of Pearl for the inlays and on the Neon Pink one I use what's called Abalam. These guys somewhere in Asia take very thin slices of Abalone, match up the grain and color then glue them into large sheets of Abalone. The stuff looks pretty damn good and from them can be cut some real nice full piece inlays.

Wow! Thanks for those pictures, Tom!
Yes Kev! Pictures prove the pink one became the silver one!
Wonder what became of the dot neck, taped up version?

Re: Vinnie's expectations
Yeah, looks like a model car box, a Rodan box, a LOT of paint bottles........ Vinnie's artistic side?Streetbeat wrote:Seems like Vinnie was a lot into scale models
See the Floyd posts were upgraded when the guitar got repainted......... ugh, that front pickup install!

Re: Vinnie's expectations
Very cool..... when were these sent? That poor guitar doesn't look like it's been touched in years.
Re: Vinnie's expectations
The photos were emailed to me somewhere in mid 2010 and since Vinnie was locked in mortal combat with Kiss
he had some of his friends hold onto, to hide in other words, his guitars so Kiss or the court couldn't get their
hands on them. Then he would tell everyone that he didn't have them anymore. So I presume that he still has
possession of them in one way or another.

Re: Vinnie's expectations
wow, that is crazy. Is that the one that use to be pink. I think it's the boys are gonna rock guitar?
Re: Vinnie's expectations
Yes, that's the one that was pink. whoever repainted it put a piece of tape in the spring cavity
to save the fact that is was "the"pink one. Vinnie must have made the change for V V I .

Re: Vinnie's expectations
great story, thanks for sharing
Re: Vinnie's expectations
Tom thanks. is it possible the dot inlay vv could have gone back and had the inlays changed? or is that too big of a job? It could be he only had one VV jackson.
The other thing i will say is that years ago a photo existed of the dot inlay doublev v jackson in pink, not white tape , but i have not seen that picture since around 2006

Re: Vinnie's expectations
Doesn't look like there is neck binding on the dot neck, so that'd mean it's a different guitar.

Re: Vinnie's expectations
The frets would have to be pulled first then the binding channel cut and the binding glued in and shaped to the FB radius. Next the only way to put in new inlays might be to use some flexible faux pearl inlay material to conform to the FB radius. And, that's part of it. Last but not least refretting and leveling them and lot of work just to mess up the guitar. You could also cut the original neck off route a neck pocket then buy and install a
bolt-on neck. Although you may want to buy the neck first then do the rest. Warmouth always has some nice necks that you can buy too.
