what was your first guitar
what was your first guitar
My first guitar was a handed down gretsch committee. Boy did I get laughed at but it was actually a good guitar but ugly.
Re: what was your first guitar
My first guitar was my Fernandes Les Paul replica, a damn fine instrument, I just don't like LP's any more. I didn't need too but I have changed all the hardware over time and the pickups were swapped three times and now it's stuck with EMG's.
I had been using my brothers first guitar, a cheapie Jackson copy called a Session. I'm pretty sure the body is plywood, the fingerboard is phenolic plastic (didn't realise this till years later) with dodgy sharkfin inlays, vintage trem and EMG looking pickups.
That guitar started me off but we kept arguing and he wouldn't let me play it so I bought my own.

My first guitar was a self constructed Jackson RR with nylon strings - only for posing
in neon green and pink. I was 9 years old at this time...but had a lot of fun

A Stella ACOUSTIC . I still have it. I would sit on the side of the guitar like I was riding it and play with my thumbs. GOOD TIMES !!!
I haven't progressed much since then.

Re: what was your first guitar
Onyx tobaccoburst (plywood!) Les Paul bolt-on!!! Ok guitar for $219! Few months later got an Onyx "strat". White with black scratchplate, 2 humbuckers and a single locking trem! Strings came up through the back of the body through the trem like a standard Fender trem and then there was a "behind the nut" lock. It actually looked like a Fender trem but with fine tuners and I've seen pictures of cheap guitars in old guitar mags that have it fitted. THAT PIECE OF CRAP SNAPPED THE LOW E STRING within a week!!!!! Got that angry with it once after it snapped the low E as I was fitting it, I ran through the house and hurled the trem out the patio doors at the front of the house, bounce it of the street 25m away and into the gutter accross the street! My younger sis sheepishly went and got it 5mins later and I thanked her. I then threw it out the back door and it landed under a tree and I left it there overnight! It started to rust! ha ha ha ha! I have a bad temper with things that don't work like they are supposed to!!!! About a year later I traded them both for my white Washburn G8V! Which I still own but haven't touched in 10 years!

Ah, Onyx, making cheap guitars, I remember them. Haven't seen one in years. They probably all fell apart.

Oh and an original Gorilla 15 watt amp with a single 6"!!! I used to run a speaker wire from the speaker of it to a jack that I plugged into a Coronet amp that had 2 x 8" speakers! A stack baby!!!! Sounded like crap though! LOL Although the Coronet has a fantastic tremolo effect. Real tremolo, not the incorrect usage of the word when referring to the wang bar! I still have both!!!

Re: what was your first guitar
I too had that same solid state Gorilla Amp back in the 80's. Mine would sound alright with a distortion box for extra gain and a digital delay run through it.
How funny that Andrew had one too

Re: what was your first guitar
Geez we nearly look the same too!!!! Bro......
I got my Laney half-stack about 2 years later and then a year after that I bought an ADA MP1,Art Multiverb and a Rocktron Guitar Silencer in a little 8 bay rack! Used them for 7-8 years before getting a Boss GT5 in 98 I think as it was easier to set up. Great sounds in it too! That was the last musical gear I ever bought!!!! If I ever bother to play these days, it's the GT5 into the Coronet just to have some noise!

Mine was a Cortez Les Paul Copy
Re: what was your first guitar
Mine was a Memphis Les Paul (piece of garbage). I wanted to be Ace in the worst way in the late 70s. My parents made me pay for half of it, and I spent all summer working, saving for it.
Re: what was your first guitar
Teisco Dee Ray design! YEAH!. Ok its wasn't even playable. First playable guitar was Ibanez road star.
If you want to talk Guitars, PM me!
Re: what was your first guitar
a lot of those Teiscos had bamboo necks. Some of them sound pretty nice but i don't recall one with a straight neck.
Re: what was your first guitar
first good guitar was a Carvin but I don't recall the name. It had two humbuckers with a single in the middle position. I think it was from 87.

you would most likely knew what i was thinking,.
it was that with more rounded horns. I have the double neck exactly like VV's in storage in NOLA. It survived katrina so I am told but it has not been opened since 1997 or 98.

Re: what was your first guitar
This was the same as mine. It was a piece of shit, but I learned a lot about how to work on the circuitry, hardware etc as I gradually upgraded it. It eventually fell apart. It had a tiny body, and I was as tall then (16 yrs old) as I am now, so it looked stupid too, but it was all we could afford at the time (Christmas 1980). I remember it so well, because John Lennon was shot that same year.
Re: what was your first guitar
I can believe that guitar did not play too well. 1980 was a cool Kiss year in Australia but we lost some good muso's.

Re: what was your first guitar
I had a pink STAR guitar, (Like Paul's in 'is that you?' Was a home job. My Dad & I made it for my year 5 end of year concert. We mimed to 'I was made for love you' .Had a shitty acoustic branded 'Audition'. Remember taking guitar lessons @ school & showing up with my povo pack guitar. Being a kid, I didn't really didn't understand why I had a povo pack guitar & all the other kids had these grand looking acoustics. Funny thing was, until I saw the other kids guitar I thought my one was awesome. When I left school in year 12, I had no cool vacation like the other kids. Nope, my Dad made me get a job. So I got this hell hole job at the slaughterhouse packing smallgoods. Start @ 3, 4 in morning till 4, 5 in the afternoon. Money was good for a kid who had no skills & just got out of school. Purchased my midnight blue Charvel Model4 for myself & a Pearl 5 piece kit for my brother.
I got Jesus in my fax machine. I saw Ho Chi Minh down @ Burger King. I dated Vinnie Vincent as a Drag Queen. I still don't understand a f**kin' thing.
I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass and I'm all out of bubble gum.

Most respectfully brother but how do you upgrade a guitar like that other than the circuitry? Could you share a little more? For instance did you take a router to and carve out a cavity for a Floyd Rose?

You got a pic of that Star guitar Dannii? I would love to see it.
You've worked hard for all your stuff, that's for sure. Just send me the VG88!!!

Cool, how did it play? IMC, who ownded Hondo in the early 80's ended up owning Jackson/Charvel.

I remember it being super light with really high action (even after a setup).....It was a pretty cheap knock off though. You get what you pay for. Not the stuff Hohner is making for Prince now..

Re: what was your first guitar
So I guess you don't have it anymore? That's often the problem with cheap guitars, even after a lot of work they don't play too well.

God I wish I still had half of the stuff I have gotten rid of over the years. I always have to get rid of old to get new......why can't I be rich..LOL

Re: what was your first guitar
I'm not rich either, but I hate letting go of stuff. The market is different over here, so it's harder to find a buyer and harder to replace things if you want to get it back later on.

So true, we have limited buying resources in Australia & finding older guitars is very difficult...! Unfortunately EBay is the best option these days because it such a large marketplace but also shipping to oz from USA can be very expensive...

a cheap acoustic as present-an attempt to take my attention away from the drums- and then, when i was older, i've bought a yamaha rgx321 that i still own- changed the pickups, still love the bubinga fretboard- and, together with it, a class a all tube fender champ 12.
