guitars,pedals and assorted mods....

Post by ankh »

A few months ago i did find a greg bennett royale RL 3 in mint condition, so i've bought it.
The royale has a special construction:

since i wasn't a big fan of the pickups and i had a set of TV Jones filtertron in an Humbucker size, i've changed the picksups, and i had a guitar tha t plays well and it is very versatile

i've other guitars and that i've modded, don't know if you may like them, maybe it can give some ideas...

I've bought a Harley Benton 2 HB telecaster copy( strings are attached to the back of the body, ) and i've put a couuple of Vintage Ibanez super 80 i had layng around.

About HB, i also bought a dobro and the bartione( 2 p 90s),thye are great VFM for wha t i need, without breaking he bank. The baritone was also a siupreise, a freidn of mine compared it wiht a PRS SE Baritone and he liked the HB more. The PRS has a more round tone but the HB has more clarity in the upper register.

A Cheap Chinese jackson pale blue color was perfect for a Duncan Invader pickeup that someone has given to me as gift.In the neck i've put an Humbucker that sound like a cross between a regular humbucker and a singel coil.Couple with a Randall rg 80,the dirt channel it gives you the sound of that old Vivian Campell vid,and d the neck pu gives you the sound of Neal Schon' s " BIg Moon " song.

I hope this post isn't too boring....

Very cool. Do you have pictures of the other guitars?

We'd love to see them.

Here's the Jackson:

the Duncan invader is in the bridge position,as you can see.

here's the Baritone:

Here's the HB with the two Vintage Ibanez super 80's; the tone control is a push pull to split the coils.

An SG junior copy, i changed the pickup and also the bridge,it is a compensated Wilkinson bridge.I had to adjust the bridge a bit to make it be in perfect tune:

This one is a strange one, i did find an SX les paul copy in a flea market, the original owner slashed the top many times and put a few other things on the top of it, looked like someone did cut it with an axe. So i restored it and a friend of mine painted it red.The pickups are Mighty Mite.I brought it to a friend of mine who had a Gibosn Custon shop p90 les paul, the difference were minimal, sound wise, just a few shades here and there.

Last pic is a cort Ultramatic, i put a couple of Duncan's in it, a 59 and a JB in the bridge, it sounds really well:

Last project was to turn a cheap Volume pedal i had layng around into a Tone control pedal , realy useful when i play with an Ebow.

Nice work!! You really don't like keeping the pickups stock!

What amp are you running these through?

LOL, the pickups choice ws based on the fact that the orginal ones weren't doing the guitars justice:In each and every case, the sound made a quantum leap. About the Invader, someone gave it to me as present, and so i'v bought the guitar and put it there.Same with the super 80's.The roswell were good, but the ibanez had a wider spectrum and also a broad range in dynamics.

Usually i play htose guitar through a Fender champ 12(class a, all tube) ,or a Marshall jcm 900 (with el 34) or either a Farfisa 40 (all tube, Jensen Speaker) or the Randall rg 80 112 c.
In i'm playng experimental music, i use whatever it gives me the sound i'm lookn for, sometimes i go direct in one of the many multifxs i have or a use either a DG stomp or a magic Stomp. The multifx are linked with the guitar signal ( with palmer pDI 09 or some peaker sim)via a mixer and the sound comes off some powered speakers( ala Carlton) or, if i want to play at home, the sound goes from fx to two guitar tube amps. Each solution has different pros and con's.....

Ok, you've got a pretty varied selection there, for guitars and amps, which can obviously give you a lot of sounds, as you say, for all kinds of music style, very cool man.

too kind!

In my experience, if the sound goes from fx to guitar amps , it is moe "natural" for a guitarist who is accustomed to that spectrum of frequencies(generally speaking, guitar amps don't exceed the 5k herz range),but if you go the other way, i.e. putting the fx post amp and then in good, broad range powered speakers, the sound breathes a bit more, especaally if you use long reverbs or long delays.

Both solutions work according the the kind of music you are making.
As an example:

Scott henderson has pedals in front of the amp, then from the speaker out the sound goes through a device that reduces the signal to line level, it goes into a boss se 70 multi fx(for reverb and delays) and then into the main input of feder hot rod deville.

Larry Carlton used to have a Dumble ,an sm57 in front of the speaker, the sigaal then did go to a mixer with delay, chorus and reverb in the loop and the outs of the fxs went into other inputs of the mixer and then out to the powered speakers, to achieve a sound similar to his studio sound.
