Live shows - set lists

Post by Genebaby »

Seeing Metallica the other week and noting how they played a very varied set over their Australian tour, and everywhere else too I'm sure, reminded me of how much Kiss and especially AC/DC stick to the same songs all the time.

AC/DC were in the news earlier this year when they basically told some of their biggest fans to eat shit as they refused to change their set list for the Black Ice tour. I saw them in Feb, it was awesome, but a lot of fans worldwide were going to multiple shows and asked the band to mix it up a little.

Brian Johnson told them to take a hike, their show was SOOOO big and SOOOO complicated it was too difficult to change the songs at all. What a bunch of crap I thought at the time, and now after seeing Metallica I am even less impressed.

Didn't effect me much in the end only seeing the one show.

I recall when Kiss played three nights in Melbourne in '97 they changed two songs on the third night. One was an Ace tune. I saw five shows on that tour and a bit more change in the setlist would have been very nice.

Agreed!

More bands should change it up a bit here and there.

Even if you have a big stage show you could leave room for one tune to get changed up - it be at the point in the set where nothing really happens radically staging / lighting wise.

I was talking with a fellow Rush fan and he was trying to say that their 'show' doesn't allow them to do such things. I say nonsense. Even if it was just one tune during the encore where they turn on all the lights they could switch it up week to week with that one tune.

It's okay if bands want to stick with the same set list but I bet more people would go to multiple shows if they didn't.

Stagnant set lists are bullshit excuses by lazy bands.

Everything about production is so high-tech now that you are the push of the button away from keeping the value and integrity of "the show " at a high level. These bands act like each song in their catalog is entirely different from one another. If the lights are programmed and the LD isn't talented enough to do a song on the "fly" , then the person shouldn't have a gig. Same goes for all techs with the production. IMPROVISE AND ADAPT YA PUSSIES !!!

I don't mind - I'm usually lucky if I get to 1 show!

But I do agree that the band and crew should be capable enough to mix it up a little bit.

Dream Theater mix it up all the time! All the songs are in the lighting computer set list changes are a no biggy! These other bands are talking crap and are just lazy!! But synco42 is right, I'm lucky to get to one concert on a tour by my favourite artists! I need to fly 1000 miles to start with!

Glad to see RUSH and even KISS have changed up their set lists on their current tours.
Especially RUSH.

I have to hand to to Kiss (mainly Paul probabaly... don't think Gene really cares now)... I never thought in a million years they would do both Tommy and Eric's songs off of Monster live. I just wonder if they will get dropped later on in favor of Shock Me and Beth again...

i hate the fact most people just want to go to these gigs and hear the same tunes. i saw a Roy Ayres gig once and he didn't play one song that was ever released. everyone complained but i loved it. you would think the bands are sick to death of the same old tunes.

I saw Cheap Trick do a full show playing cover tunes from bands that inspired them. It was very cool to get that close to them.

A lot of "FANS"(assholes that don't get it) didn't appreciate it .
