Ya it's crap if he's using pro tools or most any new software its not a key it's a dongal a little usb hardware key or he was using cracked software and got busted.

Get your master's back from him immediately if he has them and if you do further work with him make him do end session dumps to an external drive for safe keeping.... just sayin
