But even though the albums enjoyed success, they are albums that were critically bashed and years later they are pretty roundly considered artistic misfires.

When they did what they wanted and the world be damned, they had success.

Isn't a successful record really determined by the fans who buy it? It can be haled as a great album buy critics but not liked by the fans so they dont lay down the cash. And in some bands like KISS I dont think the critics ever really like there stuff so, in there case if it sells the fans dig it, its a success . And Kiss has never been concerned with the artistic level of there albums, unless you consider getting me as a 13 year old jumping on my bed playing broom guitar and sticking my tongue out a artistic success. But thats all I really want from Kiss that I wanna jump up and down and play air guitar feeling.

I think Asylum WAS a commercially successful album. It went gold and, I believe, platinum. Listening to it now, a lot of the album doesn't seem to stand up. (IMO and a lot of others it also seems.) I think a big part of why it doesn't stand up is that they were not being true to themselves as a band, musically OR visually.
