Yeah , I wore a lick it up t shirt at high school in 89 and got so.much fun made of me. I used to.wear over kil, suicidal tendencies l and neuclear assult shirts to fit it. Vvi shirt would have gotten my ass kicked. Queebsryche , Dokken , crue were usually passable.

My dad managed at a concert venue in dallas called deep Elum live around the time of revenge and kiss were offered for many dates including New years eve and the venue was less than 2000 capacity and they passed on it as it was considered a risk.

The hot in the shade tour did well because of strong supporting line up and two pretty big mtv hits .. the crazy nights tour I heard was very low attendance on the west coast but pretty good east coast. My friend saw the crazy nights show in Denver and it was only 1/4 full.
I think however the crazy nights tour on the UK was by far their highest European attended tour ever but that may change as UK had some very large arenas these days unlike the 80s

KISS and KISS-related bands were mostly mocked while I was in High School. (Graduated in 1989.)
I remember when HITS came out and I had the cassette with me one Saturday. I played it at a party and it only lasted a few songs. The guitar players just couldn't bag on it enough. The thrash guys all talked about how "KISS sucks now".

It's weird how everybody's taste in music changed every 6 months when the next thing came out and that's ALL they'd listen to. And I was given shit for listening to other kinds of music. Now I read those same people's Facebook pages "I like ALL kinds of music". SHUT THE F UP!

it was funny because all the thrash bands loved Kiss. I remember Megadeth played with them at some festivalin the 80s and all they could talk about is how much they loved Kiss but the Megadeth fans all hated them.

I think Hard Rock was considered closer to top 40 in the late 80s, maybe in Hollywood it was a little more acceptable as 'cool'.

It's weird how in the late 80's when I was in high school Kiss had had excellent musicians in the band with Vincent, St. John, Kulick and Carr but the Lynch, Vai, Van Halen devotees at my school still couldn't take them seriously. I guess they just couldn't fully recover from the "kiddie band" status of the late 70's/early 80's.

I remember one guy who was a Lynch/Satriani worshipper and a year older than me handing me a cassette version of the Elder and scoffing and saying "here, you can have this, I've moved on to "real" music". I loved all that stuff too and went thru my wannabe shredder phase with Harry K. Cody, Vai, Cacophany, Racer X, etc. and loved some thrash stuff too but somehow always came back to Kiss and always got excited about the next release, Kiss magazine, etc. While most my age had moved on to looking at them as nothing but a childhood phase, my brother and I still defended them as a legitimate band.

Hell, when VVI came out even Vinnie's association with Kiss had some of my peers rolling their eyes at another "Kiss guy" even though Cusano could smoke any of their favorites in the songwriting AND shredding dept.!

Alot of thrash band members were inspired to play guitar and start a band after seeing Kiss. Like Scott Ian and Dimebag Darrell, who idolised Ace Frehley.

Yeah. I suppose tunes like strutter , cold gin and deuce if they were speeded up with double bass drum added you come close enough to thrash. Didn't death angel do a cover of cold gin?
Most of the thrash was coming out of San Francisco and the lighter stuff out of los Angeles if i remember correctly.

I have a vinyl copy of the Elder because a thrash guy knew I like KISS and he had also "outgrown" them. And when he gave it to me it was, "You want this? I don't listen to these guys anymore."

The funny thing is I still see these same dipshits at Kiss concerts today yelling and screaming as if they had always loved them...

... but I know better.

Like I said, I have read the Facebook pages on a lot of these people that gave me crap for liking KISS and laugh at how they say they love everything.
