Just got back from a cool guitar clinic - Mattias Eklundh

So half my band went to see Def Leppard again tonight and the other guitarist and I went to a guitar clinic with a guy from Sweden called Mattias Eklundh, who does solo stuff and fronts a band called Freak Kitchen.

I hadn't heard of him before but wanted to check it out. He was great, very funny and lots of fun and of course plays like a mofo. He has this crazy harmonic thing going on.

He played us a version of La Bamba he did which I just found online, it was fantastic in person.

He did some playing of Bach or Beethoven with an orchestra and Steve Vai sent him an email to say good luck following the conductors baton. He wished Phil Rudd was able to keep the time!'

This is the guitar he was playing tonight, his custom Caparison model the Applehorn, who picked him up years ago and he's stayed loyal. http://www.caparison.jp/caparison-eng/e ... ehorn.html

Anyone else notice the frets on the guitar? must be a odd distortion on the video.
I like this guy, never heard of him but I love people who have a odd twist on music... plus he does not just sweep pick everything, I cant stand the constant whirling of nothing but sweeping.

Thanks Gene

He does have an odd twist on music, and he's very knowledgeable too. Had us doing some time signature exercises, which were tough!! He did it easily though.

I forgot about the frets. They are bent as he uses a tempered fret board. Not sure if it's the exact Buzz Feiten system, but it's the same thing where the guitar is actually in proper tune, he loves that. Plus he's endorsed so he doesn't have to worry about fret jobs, lol.

Steve Vai actually uses that fretboard on some of his guitars.

Yes, he did mention that website. He loves the tempered board and only uses it.

Me, I have no issues with the imperfections of the regular guitar, thanks goodness. I don't even know how to get that done to a guitar around here.

Hey TJ!!! How about a couple of Superstrats and Vees with this fingerboard!!! :P :P :P

If Yngwie has perfect pitch and can play a ratty old Strat with ordinary frets, I think I'll give these a miss!

Well, what he does with harmonics, and he was showing us, he can use the perfect intonation as before he got a lot of dissonance he didn't want and was always trying to adjust.

I am glad I don't care or need that.

YES!! He did mention that it was Kiss in 1976 that got him started and played a few bars of Detroit. He then got into AC/DC and praised Malcolm as the BEST rhythm player, which is hard to compete with.

You don't like Malcolm Young as a rhythm player? The man has a crazy right hand.

With Phil and Malcolm AC/DC have one of the best rhythm backbones of any rock band.

Shram, The boys in AC/DC are just plain solid and they deserve every accolade they get for their music, their technique, and most importantly THEIR KINDNESS. True gentlemen !!!

Watching and listening to their records and DVD's has really made me WANT TO back down on the distortion.
