I know Vinnie doesnt like Mark's voice but I think this is one of the best recorded rock vocals of the 80s. The vocals add to the song for sure

Somehow Mark's voice was perfect for the songs and sound of ASG. It's hard to imagine anyone doing a better job.
Plus he looked great in the videos. Better than the Boyz look he had.

i know mark wasn't as technical as Robert but that voice is pure magic on the record especially the ballads and Ashes.
Its so hard to imagine why love kills wasn't huge. Such great song writing and emotion from vinnie. The mix is perfect. I wish Vinnie was what he appears to be when you see that video. I perfect idol for a teenager in the 80s. The only thing i would have done is said fuck off to nightmare on elm street being in that video which is way bellow the great song. I couldnt see mtv playing freddy for the little kids and the song is way above a 'b' movie.
I still am frustrated for the band and I think VV should have been much cooler to Mark for that amazing performance even if VV drove him to hell and back to get to it.. he could have been stuck with Graeme Bonnet or Peter Marino and then he would have had some problems.

i still say love kills is the best vocal recording of the 80s after watching it again. pure brilliance from the whole recording team and mark. The sound of Vinnie's acoustic guitar is amazing.

Love it...One of the best songs ever recorded & Mark rules in it. VV is a 'after the facts kinda guy'. He don't like this & he don't like that. Instead he should embrace the awesomeness of what he had done, but instead he wants to tear down his own house of cards. Great song writer, brilliant musician, but one huge fuck up as a member of the human race. I don't like to agree with too many thing Gene say, but it's true, VV is self destructive. What a waste.

I've often thought the same thing when I hear this tune, That Time of Year, Ecstasy, the whole first album, LIU, etc., etc...

not long before VV said bad things publicly about Mark this year, Mark was keen to look at a VVI reunion. I know his voice seems to be finished but it would have been one way to get a small tour going . I even heard that Mark wanted to smooth out differences. Any way thats over now.

yes, one member here was in contact with him. he was into speaking with vinnie. Also another member years ago met Slaughter with Bobby Rock and they were all real happy to speak about Vinnie.

I have to agree . The best singer for that song. He was young and didn't always sound great live but maybe also he couldn't always hear himself live .
The recording was so dynamic . Power, character and haunting . Great job recording. I would say it was not only marks work to get such a great vocal.
If vv and Roberts voices are amazing but they lack that robert plant character that was so great on asg. I like Rf the best but very different .

ASG was one of my favorite albums for a long time after it first came out and even a few years after. I still like the album and think the producer/Vinnie did an unbelievable job getting the absolute best out of Mark Slaughter's voice and singing style.
Having said that, VVI is still one of my top all-time albums. I think the songs are better lyrically, the production sound of the guitars is a lot more aggressive without losing the melodic quality, the solos are like nothing I've heard before or since and Fleischman just nails the vocals.
I know it will never, ever happen...but I would absolutely LOVE to hear ASG done in the "style" of VVI with Fleischman on vocals. Like I said above, they did a good job getting the best out of Mark, but I think it would've been out of this universe with Fleischman.

Agreed. I think Dana and vv were producers and the engineer obviously takes credit too for the vocals.

Rf all the way but the haunting dynamic performance on love kills for me is best of any rock singer of the 80s.

Just reviewing the songs lyrically, I think Vinnie was getting a little...pretentious...on ASG and GFH. There are still killer songs on both, but he was clearly getting blinded of own literary genius by the time ASG was recorded.

Damn it I hate that fukn shortened solo in Love Kills! Also I could never figure out why they chopped this tune up so bad on the ASG remaster and completely removed the little bridge part after the solo... and it's not even a good editing job (sounds like the CD skippin... but it's not!) Stupid move by Dana...

the edit was for the radio 7" version but no idea why it had to be shorter and feature on the new version of the record.

I can't find it, but I remember a very pithy statement made by (I think) Bob Kulick where says Vinnie Cusano was a great songwriter, but Vinnie VINCENT was not. I'm paraphrasing there, but I think it's a nice way to suucinctly say that Vinnie was an amazing talent that was forever tainted by the trappings of success in the music industry.

most people say he was a great songwriter.
What annoys me is the stupidity that vinnie could write but Paul and Gene couldn't. If you look what kiss wrote before vv joined compared with what vv wrote in the same period its a joke. Also Kiss were churning out two albums a year. Most of the early stuff was kiss alone and to be honest they could not have had a lot of time to write new tunes in the 75 to 1981 period but they did and did some brilliant ones.
Vinnie 'was' as great songwriter, but what did he do with it? Nothing other than 3 great albums plus the 3 tunes on Creatures and Revenge.
To say Vinnie is a more talented writer than Kiss is really a joke and how many tunes has he written since 1989/1990 as far as I can see ... none.

I think Gene & Paul are great rock lyricists, but they need a musician to take it to the next level.
In the beginning that was Ace. The sloppiest, laziest musician with little range. BUT compare the WICKED LESTER version of songs and G&P demos to what happened to those songs once Ace was added to the mix.
Then after Ace left, Vinnie filled that same roll. I think it's evident that such a musical influence was missing on Animalize & Asylum. KISS was trying to do another LIU...and there are some good and great songs...but overall those albums don't come together.
