I don't know...Didn't even know about Steve auditioning for gene in 82...Seems Gene 'borrowed' the name idea.

Steve was in a group called "the fine malibus", managed by Bill Aucoin.Bill proposed the song to Vini Poncia, and Steve agreed to give it to them ´with the premise that he was playng the solo.He thought at the time that the "OOC" could have been a good seller.

Billy Idol was a better fit for him and a great move, record sales and popularity wise. By 83 he was huge.

Steve Steven's writting Credits & Performance. I asked Steve if he ran into Vinnie during the recording of Peter Criss's 'Let me Rock You' LP & he said no, he just came to do his stuff & that was it.

Vinnie is credited for 'Tears' on Peter Criss's 'Let me Rock You' LP.

John Waite's version of Tears is more Rockin'.

Vinnie's demo is still my fave. Peter's is alright but I never liked Waite's version... took all the melody out.

This one definitely should've been a hit... if not for Vinnie then for somebody. Vinnie's vocals fukn slay on this one. I could hear it on some mid-80's soundtrack, St. Elmo's Fire or some Brat Pack movie.

Apparently I'm the only guy on this site that is not a huge fan of Vinnie's singing/voice. The guy can obviously carry a tune, but I just don't get all the praise. His range is pretty limited and he sings from his throat instead of his diaphragm or (as most hack like myself) nose.

Sammy will offer Vinnie a soothing meat lozenge to aid his sore throat.

Gypsy always sounded like it belonged on the Arthur 2 soundtrack to me!!!! I can see Dudley Moore driving a Rolls Royce now....................
Vinnie's voice is nice but as he knew, there are better than him out there!

I'm not overly fussed with Vinnie's vocals/voice either. I prefer when his vision is realised with someone else singing them super human high!!!

Everybody likes something different. And if you like Vinnie's voice, more power to you. I just don't think it's his strength.

Vinnie's strength was in his songwriting... he just happened to be able to shred and sing... and look cool doing it.

i wouldnt have complained if vv sang a whole vvi album and i tend to like to hear the guy who wrote the lyrics sing them but I am not so sure his voice from what i have heard is heavy metal.. but i have not really heard it too much.

He can carry a tune, but he doesn't have the power to sing the kind of songs he writes. Just my opinion.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but after hearing Vinnie's vocals on some of his tunes I started thinking how cool it could've been (and much less of a headache for him) if he sang his own tunes.
The odd thing is that he has a much stronger voice than Ace but KISS fans couldn't accept Todd Howarth or Richie Scarlett as lead vocalist on Ace's tunes... they want Ace singing them.

It would be hard for me to say that Vinnie should sing his own songs...especially considering the first album. Robert's vocals are SO incredible. Even on the second album Mark was superb on Love Kills. I wouldn't want to hear Vinnie singing it.
Having said that, I would love to see Vinnie put together a real power trio where each band member took turns singing lead vocals. More raw. Less multi-tracking. Like a metal version of Cream. (Which I guess King's X already is...but still would like to see that.)
I'd like to hear Vinnie get back to something a little more melodic and soulful and not as worried about being so over the top like Guitarmageddon.

His vocals may have not been the most incredible out there but the fact is, a guitarist who can play and front his own band is 100% more marketable than one who can not. This was his problem marketability wise with VVI and his over all image. He was just a shredder in the eyes of the public, and its a tough sell to have a band with your name and all you do is play guitar as far as they can see. It comes off pompous and ego driven, plus you end up like he did with a band mutiny and the vocalist taking a hike . But if he ripped on the guitar and sang in VVI even if the vocals were not stratospheric he could easily have had moved with trending music, been a lot more marketable record company eyes and seen as a egocentric artist instead a psychotic prick.
Just my opinion.

1031, I couldn't have said it better!
Erg, I totally understand what you're saying. I never could imagine anyone else singing those tunes until I heard Vinnie's demos for Back On The Streets and Baby-O and I was blown away. It's a matter of opinion but I loved the rawness of those demos and Vinnie's voice.
But having said that, it would be hard for me to hear That Time Of Year any other way than what I'm used to. That tune is perfect.

True. Dave Mustain is not the greatest singer in the world, but he fronts his own band and sings.
It's the ages old problem with how bands are perceived. Everyone assumes the singer is the main person and they frequently are...and they also get the most attention in concert and in videos.
How many singers have jumped ship from a guitarist-lead band:
Van Halen
Montrose
Rising Force
Invasion

Ronnie Montrose actually ended the band he wanted to move on to his gamma project, Hagar was very happy where he was and even said he had no idea Ronnie was killing the project till the last gig. There were no hard feelings he was just surprised because the songs were starting to chart.

Mustaine just grunts... but for some reason it works. But to me Vinnie could've been a lead singer in his own right. I could've seen him take the Billy Squire direction with the Invasion but he wanted the high vocals that Robert and Mark supplied.
But if he ever gets his head outta his ass and releases new stuff I'd love to hear him sing all of it.

I think now, if he did manage to get his shit together and record, he should just sing. Or like I mentioned above get a power trio where the bass player also sang lead on some songs and maybe a drummer that could sing lead on one or two. Fewer guys to split the cash with!

mike Weeks on bass and vocals would do. Seen as Mike is a member here that maybe out of the question. Vinnie did ask me about Weeks and it seemed he was impressed.

That's the problem isn't it. I doubt he could stop himself ripping his band members off in some way. He's shown he is totally unwilling to honor a legal contract.

He would want them to sign an unreasonable contract or pay him to play with him.

Vinnie just needs one of these puppies and a drum machine/sequencer to play live:
http://www.roland.com/products/en/VE-5/
... all problems solved since no one is probably willing to pay $500 to join his band.
