What is the appeal. I would use one but I don't get why not having the fine tuners is better.

Some preferred the non-fine tuning Floyds because they would bump the fine tuners while picking and throw the guitar out of tune.
Some people would put a strip of tape over the fine tuners...

So what happens when your strings slip in the nut? Or just pull one out of tune? Floods are already a pain to tune.

i was told brad gillis likes them because he pulls on them with his fingers.. i dont really understand what that is, but he can not pull on the fine tuner ones.. not sure if what i said makes any sense. It could also just be what people are used to.

Those German made ones are fairly common, having been fitted to the budget range Kramers, and they are NOT the same as VV used.
He used the earlier ones made either by FR himself or by Fernandes in Japan. They share almost no common parts at all. The Japanese ones seem slightly more substantial, and have a bigger block as standard.

I wouldn't worry bout the quality. I love thing made by Schaller, they do great work and got the job making Floyd's once production was sorted and needed to go large scale.
