I love just about every early Kiss tune, and most that aren't early.
They were/are a great band. The music, the image, unbeatable.

"Do You Love Me " is the grandpa to "I Love It Loud" as far as drum sound. Can you hear it ?

they did the drums for that and God of Thunder in the elevator shaft at Electric Lady Studios in the Village. I been to that studio a few times.

They also had a camera rolling in order to see each other. I wonder if it was recording or just for communication purposes ?

They had cameras for the recording of Rock and Roll Over didn't they?
I never heard of the elevator shaft thing for Destroyer before, cool.

They had a camera in the hallway during the Destroyer recordings too.

they recorded in the elevator and also in the shaft (i read) and the mic was at the top of the shaft. I think when they were in the elevator peter kept taking a trip to different floors when the elevator was accidently called

I listen to Kiss quite a bit with my daughter in the car, training her up.
So many good tunes. I've said before but I was really attracted to Peter's signature drumming on the early Kiss tunes.
So many songs with really cool drum parts in them, it was really magical how they all got together and put those albums out.

From the early tunes... Do You Love Me is awesome. Strutter is very good too... It's the ring tone of my cellphone.

If we call Early Kiss 1973 through 1977 then:
Kiss 1973 "Black Diamond" - Not my favorite Kiss Album
Hotter than Hell 1974 - Love this album especially Watchin You and Strange Ways.
Dressed to Kill 1975 - Rock Bottom and Love Her all I Can
Destroyer 1976 - Detroit Rock City and Sweet Pain
Rock N Roll Over 1976 - A great album! I especially like I Want You, Take Me, Baby Driver, Love Them Leave Them, Makin Love
Love Gun 1977 - I dig I Stole Your Love, Got Love For Sale and Almost Human
Alive 2 Side 4 1977 - All American Man and Larger Than Life - Bob Kulick is one of the best guitarists to play with Kiss after Vinnie!

???? @ Kev. The first Kiss album? It's a classic man. So many good songs, save Love Theme and Kissin' Time, which is "ok" for what it was recorded for.

they always play more tunes from the first record than any other.
I agree with Kev.. Strange ways is awesome!! I want you.. Rocket Ride.. I actually love the double platinum version of strutter with all that flange.
Also I think Bob Kulick is the 2nd best Kiss guitarist after whats his name again??

Vic,
Your correct that there are many recognizable songs off the 1st album but they just aren't my Kiss Favorites. My favorite Kiss Period starts with Bob Kulick, Vinnie Vincent, Mark St. John and Bruce Kulick. The late 70's through the early 1990's. I don't care for Ace Frehley as a guitar player although he has probably influenced more people to play guitar than anyone in history. 3 of the 4 players above are pretty amazing players with the exception of Bruce who is solid but not amazing. The period from the late 1970's to the early 1990's was the period of time when the Kiss Musicianship was at its technical best. Frehley was a hack in the 70's and I think that most would agree that 35 years later he can't play really any better than he did in 1975. In fact it could be argued that he doesn't play as well now as he did in 1975 or 1977. Don't get me wrong I like Ace and I purchased Anomoly but mostly for Kisstory rather than him being a good player or writer. I think his best songs of his solo career were strongly improved by either Tod Howardth or Ritchie Scarlett both of who play circles around Ace.
Peace
Kev

I can dig it Kev. I love the early Kiss and the later Kiss, acknowledging the improved level of musicianship and singing of the 80's/90's.
Ace doesn't play better than he did in the 70's, he was all over the shop when I saw him in Feb but it was pure Ace all the way, he's been a fuck up his whole life but he gets by thanks to others mainly.

The best early KISS tune is for me Black Diamond! I love the beginning of this tune with the clear guitar! Amazing for me when I was a child! I've heard it every day and wanted to play it.

I believe that someone brought it up on this forum before.
I think it is beyond cool to see Vinnie's C.O.T.N. vest worn by the drummer in the beginning sequence of the 'Rise To It " video.

Man, the costumes in that video were such a hodge-podge, I don't know why they didn't get it sorted better than that. Maybe it was too hard to find the parts that matched in the warehouse?

When I was a huge Kiss fan "Hotter Than Hell" was one of my favs, that and Double Platinum cause it has all the songs on it. I have my opinions about Aces guitar playing which I shall keep to myself lol

. But I think one of his more inventive solos is "Strange Ways" Goin Blind was a good one too. Black Diamond, Love Gun. Hate "Firehouse", and I think it was ridiculous they made V play that tune on tour, it just didn't fit in my opinion, and obviously ripped from Zepp. Then hell how does anyone even know what Ace played on after 76

.

Do you know the demo of "God Of Thunder" ? Paul is singing it and it's an up tempo thing - very cool and listenable.

Everything on the first 3 albums was magical. The next couple of albums were really good. By the time Love Gun rolled out, I think they were still doing some really good songs, but they were more focused on marketing their "brand." I think all the albums after Love Gun were hit and miss up until Creatures.
Some of my favorite early kiss tunes that arent super popular:
Strutter
Mr Speed
Take Me
Nothin' to Lose
C'mon and Love me
As it relates to Vinnie..... I have always thought his song writing ability is amazing. I wish there was an album of music that showed more of what he was capable of doing than he showed in Kiss as a guitarist, but more restraint than the stuff he did with VVI.
Basically... I want to hear him as a guitar player with less restraint than he showed in Kiss, but more restraint than he showed in VVI. I think that would be amazing.

I think you get that with ASG, great songs, less reckless but more crafted playing than Invasion; unfortunately the sound let's it down a bit, his guitar work on ASG often gets less credit than it deserves because of this.
As for Kiss, pretty much agree with your synopsis (excluding Kissin Time and Love Theme...), but not keen on Parasite which seems to be a fav around here.

Ah! Yes, it is more up-tempo but feels less raw ...
I'm with Vinnie with the "leave it alone after the first polished recording" attitude.
I actually prefer all of Vinnie's raw demos ... i.e. "Back On The Street", "I Need Love", "Gypsy In Her Eyes" vs the polished album cuts with other vocalists ... then again, I prefer Vinnie's voice over all the vocalists he worked with.
Nothing devastates me like Vinnie's raw guitar solos ... and his voice!

That's a good point! I wanna hear more his voice and different styles of music. Fast solos and a lot of melodic solos (not only shred style). That would be amazing to hear

Love Theme from Kiss is cool too... It's got a slight funky groove to it via Gene's bass line...

I would love to hear some chilled out acoustic Vinnie stuff with him singing.
That would be awesomeness !

Are you listening, Vinnie? We'd love (but not expect or demand ...) to hear all sorts of your espressions! Accoustic & mellow, shred, vocal etc.
You can't go wrong with your talent!

Yes, I enjoy the older stuff ... Strutter is my fave non-Vinnie song but I didn't follow them in later years,
Of course I show much blatant favoritism towards Vinnie. I constantly forget Kiss existed without him.
