i thought his RR Jackson was warmer tone, but to be honest i don't know what I am talking about. It must be his amp over the guitar I would say because maple isn't noted to be a warm tone wood, maybe mid to slightly high.

I love the guitar tone on LIU too, it's great. I think it's the amps and how they are miked. Makes all the difference.

warm mics are a good start. I got the mics Pink Floyd mic'd their amps with.. silk crunch and warm.

I was able to mimic it quite well with a governor pedal. Distortion on like 3 over my crunch channel on my Hughes and kettner.

You are correct. i never thought this was true until I witnessed a buddy of mine play another friend's amp and pedals and told him to roll the knobs. My buddy's sound shined through : creamy mid-range. **no joke intended.

Then you have people like satchel who can mimic their tone and style. That's what I'm after with my playing. I don't find it to be copying, I see it as having more colors to paint with.

I've got Vai playing through a 15 watt Laney with a Boss OD1 on a CD from a British guitar mag from 10 or so years ago. Sounds like Vai!!! Poses the question. why does he need all that gear???? LOL

That's probably the pedal he uses when recording. Very popular pedal.

Vai actually swears by the orange colored DS-1 Distortion pedal by Boss.

A mate I used to jam with in the early 90's when we both started playing guitar had on of those orange pedals.
I was using a Digitech Twin Tube and I could not stand the sound of his guitar. Ugh!
I have a yellow Boss Overdrive modded to be a TS1 but I don't use any pedals so haven't used it.

One of my favorite Boss pedals is the yellow distortion /overdrive pedal. It's a normal sized pedal that allows one to have the best of both worlds and utilize both .
