All projects that involve Paul Gilbert are exceptional.

I just got the new Mr. Big album yesterday. Upon first listens, it sounds like their last album with Paul (Hey Man ). Nothing has hit me over the head yet although one cannot deny the talent and chops involved. Funny how it's easy to take things for granted when the musicians like this make it look and sound so easy.
The single "Undertow" is very cool .

Paul Gilbert's social skills match his virtuosity.Anything he does is with conviction , discipline, and shared enjoyment.

If Vinnie's social skills matched his playing skills , we would have a living deity on Earth.

I can't get enough of Paul.
Watched Addicted to That Rush on youtube the other night.....and always go back to his 1st Instructional Video intro "Gimme an 'L' " etc..... Licks ! Then goes into that incredible solo !

Always thought that Billy, Paul and Pat could have fun with someone who only knew how to play Smoke on the Water on the guitar! They just love playing that much!

Thanks to the 'Into The Night' thread, i was thinking about the 1st Racer X album and how good it was/is.
Can someone tell me though, what is it that makes an album's recording bad?
the 1st Racer X album, arguably one of their best, sounds like shit compared to Technical Difficulties or Superheroes.
Is it just the mix? or the original recording technique that loses some of the quality.
....i guess what i'm aiming for is Paul to remix the 1st album to sound like TD or SH, that would make me a very happy man! or is it jst not possible without re-recording the whole thing?

It's the cost involved in recording...You pay big bucks, especially in the 80's you get a great studio. Things like great compressors, desks with parametric eq. Engineers that know what they are doing. All counts. & you know the saying you can't polish a turd. Bad sound is bad sound. Yes you can fix it up a bit, but once it is recorded that's it.

Motleys Theatre of Pain is an example...bad recording, sonically flat..

I love that album...Yes you are correct, sonically flat, but I love the theme...It quite a dark album lyrically. Always wanted to see the intro to a TV show like Vegas, or CSI Miami with 'Keep Your Eye on the Money' blasting in the background.

I once read an interview from Mark "The Animal" Mendoza about 4-5 years ago & he was kind of bagging Gene Simmons & went as far to say that he (Gene) was so disliked that even Paul Stanley didn't invite him to his wedding..? Does anyone in LA like anyone?

Great guitar combined with bad comedy

Paul Gilbert is absolutely incredible. The only I miss from his overall body of work; is that it seems he never hooked up with a great singer.

As a guitar player; there's nobody better though. Gilbert's 'got it all'. And, he comes across as a friendly, humble type of guy.

Eric Martin's not a great singer????? The guy has an incredible range and still sounds as good as he did in 89'!!!

At the Mr. Big show I saw last year, Eric Martin was the M.V.P. ---- He sang like a birdand was strong ALL NIGHT. Billy was right next to him OWNING the stage. Pat was solid.

I was actually a little disappointed with Paul even though he was top notch. His tone in recent years is really EARTHY and clunky. It works will for the Seventies-style funky riffs but doesn't translate well to the MONDO-SHRED that he is known for .

I believe he was stepping on a pedal called the Swollen Pickle or Green Rhino for extra OOMPH that night. It didn't sit too well with me. It sounded BLOCKY/CLUNKY on the super-fast runs
Believe me, He was STELLAR. I would just like him to have a setting that enables his ADA tone from the early Racer X days as well.

Sadly that is true! The story goes, one day he heard the phone ring, picked it up, put it to his left ear and couldn't hear the guy on the other end! One of his ears is gone! Hence he wears the big headphones for sound protection!

That's terrible! Poor guy, I never knew about that with his hearing. Every gig I play I wear protection. In my ears people, in my ears!!!!
