Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post by KissMyAss »

Post traumatic stress disorder can make you feel like you are off your rocker. I was diagnosed with social phobia, dysthymia, and an unrelated obsessive compulsive disorder. Fortunately, no mental illnesses..But reminders may trigger paranoia, depression, and (in the case of combat) auditory or visual hallucinations in people with PTSD.

What causes PTSD?

Life threatening or traumatic experiences.

How does PTSD affect your life?

PTSD may affect your life for years. After the incident, it has the greatest impact. For months after the incident, you may believe your life is in constant danger. At night you may have dreams reliving or relative to the trauma. You may believe these dreams are real (going to happen). You may fear for your life, and avoid going out as much as possible. If another person caused the trauma, you will avoid them at all costs. And may imagine the person causing you harm, again...PTSD may affect your relationships with family, at work, and with friends.

PTSD sufferers become distrustful of others. A PTSD sufferer may change behavior patterns such as sleeping fully clothed. For seemingly no reason, a person with PTSD maybe reminded of the event and fly off the handle. Sometimes losing it in social situations others perceive as normal. PTSD may either be brief or become chronic. It may manifest into depression and panic attacks.

Some other physical complications may include irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain, and insomnia...

Therapy relieves the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, making it possible to function.

I don't know. Did he experience a trauma that I'm unaware of? He doesn't talk much about his life.

Officially had it. Had to man up & deal with it myself. & was too paranoid to look for any external help. Took, something like 4 years to realise something was wrong. I think now, I've just integrated part of it into my personally. To be honest I should have done something about it earlier, but it a lot of ways I physically couldn't at the time. Shit happens. Realize it, get a grip & move on. There are people out there who will never ever have a normal life. So badly deformed & suffering 24x7. There are people in this world who will go without a meal, not just today, not just tomorrow, but for a week or more. When you understand this, you'll know that your life isn't so bad & you can move on.

5 years ago I had a collapsed lung due to a very aggressive pneumonia. I was given an on-the-spot choice. Go into emergency surgery with risk of possible side effects or die. I chose the surgery. The surgery (pulled out my lung, repaired it and re-inserted it) resulted in severe damage to the entire bank of nerves that go to the upper-left side of my body.
After I was recovered from the surgery, I was sent to a pain management specialist. One of the best in the U.S. He said the damage is one of the worst he has ever had to deal with. He inserted an electrical device into my spine that sends "soothing shocks" throughout my body and has me on a regiment of Morphine and Oxycontin.
I live each day in terrible pain. It hurts to move. It hurts to breath. I walk with a weird limp to avoid aggravating the damaged nerves.

And I will be like this for the rest of my life. Confirmed by two other specialists whose second opinions I sought out.

Even with the daily struggle to live, I still go to work every day. I still help my son. I still take care of my home & property. I get depressed sometimes, but I have a family that depends on me and I will not let them down.

Sorry to hear this erg2. Bad, Bad shit happens to good people. I too had nerve damage. Get the daily pain mostly up my left side. I had Endocarditis (inflammation of the inside lining of the heart chambers and heart valves) in 2006/07. In turn this caused one of Arteries that supply blood to one of my kidney to rupture. Had massive internal bleeding which cause the nerve damage. Then I went into a coma cause I was having multi organ shutdown (basically dying...got my Last Rites...get fun, everyone should try it, NOT!) Anyways, wake up, from a coma about a week later (strapped to the bed, with life support strapped on to me & a room full of machines keeping me alive. Renal dialysis machine is kinda cool. Like being plugged into a R2D2 ). Then they got me stronger so I could coupe with open heart surgery to replace my Aortic Heart Value. Spent the next 4 months learning to walk & learning to be a human being again. Just like the MasterCard add, priceless.

Well I'll never complain about my twice botched knee surgery again after hearing erg2 and Dannii's stories! You guys rock! 8) 8) 8)

Though I probably will because I'm a whiney bitch! :( :( :(

Of course, it could've been worse. I survived.

8% of the population has PTSD. People going through it are not alone. There is a lot of hope.

It's funny you tell me to get over almost being murdered with a meat cutting knife by my ex husband. Weren't you appalled when Vinnie was the man over powering a woman? Or was that an axe to grind?

I accept the apathetic nature of others. Get a grip and move on...those are the true feelings around here toward violence against women. The "Vinnie is such a bully" crap is just that. Isn't it?

I dealt with the probability that dangerous psychosis is fairly rare in men. Thank you, anyway for calling me a whiner. I noticed it didn't disgust you that he tried to kill a woman. Where is the righteousness now?

The world is not fair, just, or compassionate. I accept it coldness. I choose to be open and honest no matter the hardness of others' hearts. That's life.

Everyone has a whiney bitch! moment or day. It's your God given right to be a whiney bitch! :D It's when it becomes a lifestyle choice that it becomes a concern.

Hope you are Ok, KMA & erg2.

Sorry, I was talking for myself, 'to get over it'. Everyone needs to deal with their problems in a way that it suits them. And it a way that they can handle it. Didn't mean to sound empathetic to anyone situation. I just found it easier when my personal shit was hitting the fan to switch off everything. That's how I dealt with it. Problem is sooner or later all that pent up rage, just explodes like a nuclear bomb. That how I deal with shit. I suck it all in & let it brew for awhile & then I explode. That's just me. I am not a role model for anyone's life

And KMA, really sorry to hear you went through something so horrific. There is no rhythm or rhythm to why these things occurs. Like I.said, Bad bad Shit happens to Good People. (There is actually an Italian saying that roughly translates as 'God doesn't hurt (take) the Bad people, cause he's scared of them. he only hurts (takes) the good')

I think you mis-interpreted what he was saying. I think everyone on this board is pretty appalled by violence against women...or that's the conclusion I have arrived at based on reading everyone's posts for a couple of years.

I am very sorry, Danni. I hadn't any idea it was self dialogue. I do that too, sometimes, just didn't recognize it. Forgive me. I don't like being misunderstood. You probably don't either. I wish that I could take back those words. That's impossible. My apologies. At times like these, I feel like a total jackass.

Sorry to hear you went through some frightening shit, too. Definitely an example of bad things happening to good people. My 18 month old nephew died of heart failure. All children are good.

My mom called me a "piss ant". That's a pretty good description of my temper. Sarcastic crap, I regret saying.

The mistake was mine. You weren't lacking empathy. I misinterpreted your dialogue. I was totally wrong.

That's cool. Don't stress over it. All good.
And yes all children are good. Very sad about your nephew.
