Had Vinnie ...

Post by jesternjeff »

Had Vinnie placed a song he had co-wrote w/ members of KISS during the COTN / LIU period and placed it on his 1st or even 2nd album do YOU think his sales would have increased and or popularity ??? The rise of these new tapes for sale on ebay have me wondering what kind of music aside from most of the stuff whats on them.

Fair point. If he was on talking terms with them at the time, I'm sure they would have been supportive of his band too. Oh well.

Theres a video on Youtube circa '88 of Gene going thru his Xmas stocking and he pulls VVI's ASG album out and throws it behind him without even saying anything... so Im guessing Gene and Paul probably werent supportive of Vinnie after Kiss.

Even so I dont think a lost Kiss track on a VVI album would make or break it... if Love Kills and That Time Of Year didnt help him have a hit, nothing wouldve IMHO.

Unless you are referring to Vinnie rerecording, say Lick It Up, then yes, it mightve helped his solo albums. The Lowest Common Denominator loves rehashed hits.

So true. Just look at McDonalds, Coke a Cola, the 'remake' of TV series & Movies, the millions of crappy covers that 'artists' do & the sampling of old songs with the added new crap rap lyrics. It's the whole theory of 'Same Shit, Different Day'

I remember Gene and Paul did not say great things about Vinnie's output after Kiss. They either didn't like it or perhaps recognized it was better than their current albums.

It was not for a lack of great songs that VVI were not bigger than they were.

While we are on the subject, I was watching a Judy Garland musical called "In The Good Old Summertime" on AMC (American Movie Classics) a few nights ago and realized it shared the same story of a Tom Hanks /Meg Ryan movie called -You've Got Mail -that updated the story by using E-MAIL as the method of correspondence . After looking it up , I saw that the "ITGOS" was actually a revised version of a Jimmy Stewart film from 1940 called -The Shop Around The Corner-. 8) 8) 8) 8)

I haven't seen TSATC yet, but with the star-power in it , I'm sure it is a classic.
In this example, we have three movies with the same basic story ,that are classics.

In general, I do not think the buying public knows to want "original" entertainment. Humans are creatures of habit and that translates to entertainment too.

You've Got Mail was on television a few nights ago so I watched the end of it.

The song used in the final scene of the movie is... :

A cool nod to Judy and a neat coincidence with our warrior. The song has healing power indeed.

I still think he would've sold more with Warrior than Vinnie Vincent Invasion. Even though record companies encourage a trendy sound, the market gets flooded. It maybe outside the box, but sounding different gives you the edge.

If you've got Warrant, Poison...etc..all recording power ballads...that's a lot of competition. It's never the artists that go with the trend that sell the most, unless they are fortunate enough to get in early and have the right promotion. And your sound has to be catchy..a tune people can't get out of their head. Vinnie was better at hard rocking, in your face music.

I don't think kiss involvement would have helped vv. It didn't help house of lords, black n blue , bonfire etc.
To be honest kiss in the late 80s were not what they are today.
As for warrior I don't know. Not sure if the band had the 'look' and it sounded to me the band were having issues with vv so how long it would have lasted is questionable.

I have an interview with gene and Eric carr where they are asked what they think of ex kiss members work.. gene said he like ace's rock soldiers and his album. He didn't think much of white tiger and he said vv is at his best when he is toned down.

at the time, Gene did compliment Vinnie about his work in the press, sayng nice things about it.Just after a while the mudslinging about the former memebers begun..........About white tiger he did say that they needed better songs and should have not produced themselves.

A few years down the line, gene and also paul begun to slam Ace in the press......

They always said he was very talented. Also a lot of people think vv was much better before vvi. Matter of taste I suppose.

I see their point, I live Vinnie toned down as on LIU and in hyper mode on VVI. Heck, I just like Vinnie!

I read (or watched, can't remember) an interview with Bob Kulick where he said that Vinnie Cusano was a much better songwriter than Vinnie Vincent. Pithy, but he makes a point. I really like Vinnie's music. That's why I started coming here...I stay for the company. However, the first VVI album was composed of songs written years before becoming "famous". ASG is still great, but lyrically it was on the verge of being pretentious. Then if you read the lyrics for Guitars From Hell...they barely make sense. I still like some of them AND the music, but he was lyrically at his best before VVI.

I agree. I think that's what's missing on ASG and GFH. On ASG he needs a couple songs to just go completely mu-fuggen bonkers with his shredding. On GFH he needs a couple of songs to tone down the madness...like sorbet cleaning the pallet.

He can play a single note so beautifully that I wish there were more examples of that kind of restraint.

Yeah, reading through it doesn't seem like his comment(s) are directed at you (KMA) personally in any way. He was just stating his opinion on the quality/type of music KISS created in the 80s and liking VV's music but not his personal choices in life.
