What would you have done with Vinnies talent?

Post by Portillo »

If you could play guitar and write songs like Vinnie, what would you have done with your life?

What would you have done with Vinnies talent?

I would have toured the world many times and made many kick ass albums with Kiss, plus some solo stuff along the way.

Work my ass off and give thanks to God everyday for my talent.

I'm sick of swearing at God for my hack guitar playing!

I would have continued to write and play with Kiss and look at the big picture be respectful to past kiss music . After animalize ask for a slightly better deal including a bit of merch income, continued cost of living raise and the ability to write and record for other musicians on down time and the exclusion of any personal income from any thing outside of kiss. I would have been very reasonable to endorsement and artist models and pimp myself like a 25 cent hooker at a 50 cent arcade. When kiss went to the classic make up I would not change any of my standard deal but ask for a ten year / replacement 1 million dollar parachute bonus. And above all not be a dick.

I have a friend named Brian who is really good on guitar. He can play KISS perfectly and he's really into the whole 80's hair band thing like I am. The funny thing is that he's black. I've always found it funny but the guy is really talented but he does nothing with it. I could only dream about playing guitar like him ... here he is with this amazing talent and it's just wasting away. Kinda reminds me of V.

The trouble with so many of us is that we underestimate the power of simplicity. We have a tendency it seems to over complicate our lives and forget what's important and what's not. We tend to mistake movement for achievement . We tend to focus on activities instead of results. And as the pace of life continues to race along in the outside world, we forget that we have the power to control our lives regardless of what's going on outside.

There are two things which prevents us from achieving our dreams. The first is the belief that they are impossible and the second one is seeing them made possible by the twist of the wheel of fortune when we least expect it. For all that moment, all our fears rise to the surface :

The fear of suddenly setting off a long road to God knows where
The fear of a life full of new challenges
the fear of losing forever all that is familiar

Now that I got that out my head I think I would have done the same as most of you.
If you see me fallen and endless fall
If you hear me calling a never ending call
If you see me bleeding I'm losing control
If you see me dying I'm dying alone.

The great thing about Gene and Paul is that they let members do solo albums. Some bands like Metallica dont allow that.

BILL AUCOIN allowed the solo albums... once he was gone Paul wouldn't even let Eric Carr have one tune on an album. Thank Gene for Lil Caesar...

Paul most likely thinks why should anyone take the limelight. Most singers sing a whole album unlike Paul and Gene. Its kind of like Tommy Aldridge singing a Whitesnake tune.. its not going to happen. THAT SAID Tommy and Eric do sing on the new albums.

I didnt know that. Gene says in this interview though that you can release solo albums and do whatever you want. Fast forward to 4:50.

The solo albums were in the contract they signed back in 1976. It was Aucoin's idea as it was an easy way to fulfill their obligations. Of course Gene will take credit after the fact... he learned business from the best of them (Aucoin, Bogart, Delaney, Biowitz).

to be honest i have to say i don't think gene is as genius at business as he gets credit for. He fucked up big time in the 80s, started a magazine that flopped in the 90s (a magazine I did a job for actually). I think he just had a good product to sell which came out of the original hard work. To be honest the very 'family' target audience they are going for now I dont think is a great idea. I think they should turn real 'bad and dark' . Shock some parents again instead of putting a smile of their faces.

Gene's hard work in the beginning is what got Kiss recognized and yes the (4) mentioned people were what got the gimics and merchandising up and running. Gene has made a few mistakes including letting Kiss become a "Family" carnival event in the Dynasty/Unmasked era and by going Hollywood in the 80's with his movie deals...instead of working hard at making great music like the COTN & LIU albums! Gene did what was best for him and he has since "mastered" the art of selling the KISS image, it's become more on how to make lots of $$$$ instead of making lots of great music....

Yeah, but I forgot to say the guy is a genius self promoter and I do think he is intelligent and funny. I also like he promotes reel to reel recording.

Gene is smart, no doubt about that. I like his ability to admit to his flaws. Admirable. Although, like Big Ed, I don't agree with Gene 100%. There are few people I do agree with 100% or even 95%.
