I think a lot of these "3,000 licenses" are KISS fans that are starstruck and sign a shitty deal, give Gene a check and then lose their shirt because they'll never sell enough to cover his licensing fee. But hey...they got to meet Gene Simmons. Just look at all that KISS cologne and perfume. That shit was mass produced and now they probably couldn't even pay people to take the crates of that shit they have left over. Is Gene of Paul out of cash on that? No. They got paid up front. The manufacturer is out of money.

I love band merch (action figures, lunch boxes, tampons, etc.) but the way Kiss runs it in the ground takes the coolness of collecting the stuff outta the equation... when there is just too much of a brand you get sick of seeing it (Kiss in Spencers circa 1997 for example).

I wish they would just release stuff every once and awhile without trying to slap their name on every single thing just for the sake of doing it.

It did the first few weeks, but quickly moved to the discount bins. Now it can be bought on discount websites. Someone mentioned Spencers above. They were swimming in crappy KISS merch in the late 90's. They were practically giving it away. Why do you think you can find that stuff on ebay for pennies on the dollar constantly?
These manufacturers get starstruck, they think it's going to sell a mountain-load and only the few remaining die-hards are still buying. Having your logo on a lot doesn't necessarily mean that the merch is selling a lot.

I was once a pretty hefty collector. By about 2004 I hit a saturation point. I just couldn't keep up. I could not buy as much as they were putting out each year...and frequently didn't want most of it and often couldn't afford some of it. So I quit. There is still stuff I would like. I really dig action figures...not just KISS...but now there are SO many KISS action figures that you can't afford to buy them all. And even if you did, they are worthless because so many are being manufactured. There is no collectors value.
